TOP 10 THINGS TO DO IN PENANG by LOCALs

Penang is one of the most famous states in Malaysia where a lot of foreigners would actually pay at least a visit in their lifetime. Penang is not only attractive to western foreigners, but also to asian foreigners, even the Malaysians from other states. There’s a long list of reasons for them to pay a visit to Penang which including food, people and the vibes you will get here. Nowadays, here’s another valid reason of why Penang’s tourism is being boosted, the low flight ticket price if compared to the past. Not only budget airlines offer cheap flight ticket but also some 5-star airline like Malaysia Airlines [Malaysia Airlines Promo]. If you do your research online, it’s not hard to find articles pertaining to Penang at all. However, it’s hard to find one that tell and guide you truly and genuinely. 1⃣️Pay a Visit to Goddess of Mercy Temple (Kuan Yin Temple).

Okay, I know I’m a Chinese and a Taoist~ So, I have to recommend you to visit to this historical and unbelievable temple in Penang. I think everyone in Penang knows about this temple as it’s truly sought-after. I also have quite a lot of Chinese friends from other states came to Penang just because of this temple. Why is it so special? The story was told quite often by the elders in Penang. During the second world war, this temple was being struck by a bomb without any destruction. Since then, this temple has become a legend itself. Not to cheat on you but a lot of Chinese think that this temple can be able to fulfill our wishes. I did try it before and my wishes had subsequently achieved. Why not give it a try by yourself?

2⃣️Take Photos with the Street Murals.

This is kinda the ‘it thing’ or ‘must do thing’ when visiting to Penang since 2010 if not mistaken. Thanks to Ernest Zacharevic for creating this trend in Penang. This trendy activity is not only for foreigners but also for locals as you would definitely see a lot of locals themselves also doing the same thing you do. Line up, pose, take a pic! By tracking these street murals, you may also enjoy the oldies and memorable street scene in Penang. Of course, you would also bump into some hidden gems of food too!

3⃣️Grab your own Penang from the Window of the TOP in Komtar.

Previously, people went up to Penang Hill for the whole picture of Penang. But now, you have to get on the bandwagon! That’s the Window of the Top in Komtar. You may now enjoy the Penang and even grab it at the highest point in Georgetown. If you want more excitement, you may also have a walk on the Penang, actually it’s a window glass which on the rooftop of Komtar Tower at Level 68. I’d never tried it before as I’m quite afraid of height but I plan to go there someday~ Plenty of my local friends had already paid a visit and they rated at this experience quite positively!

4⃣️ Do the mainstream - Let’s go UP to Penang Hill!

This is another option of grabbing the Penang but in a more ‘natural’ way. If you don’t like to be in air con and you fond of the nature, this is exactly your style. I went up to Penang Hill less than 5 times. Why? Coz it’s always crowded by tourists. I really like Penang Hill but no choice, I don’t really like crowds. Haha! In order to chase the modernity, Penang’s government has been innovating and expanding it to include several interesting spots like Love Lock (like the one you will find at Namsan Tower Korea) and The Habitat (canopy and tree top walk).

5⃣️SEAFOOD SPREE

Yes, Penang is an island! This means that you may eat a lot of cheap seafood! Ermmm, it still depends on which stalls or restaurants you visit. I can tell you a secret, locals always go to Tambun for cheap and fresh seafood. But they are all prepared and cooked in Chinese ways. So, don’t expect to have cheesy lobsters or fish and chips~ Seafood can be really amazingly delicious in its Chinese way!

6⃣️Night Market everyday.

Night Market is pretty well a routine for Malaysian. In Penang, our night market has its own schedule. So, you have to ask the hotel receptionists or airbnb’s owners in order to get some hints. I only know a few of them which are good and worth for a visit. Monday in nearby Macallum area, Tuesday in Batu Maung, Thursday in Bayan Lepas, Friday in Jelutong. Everything in night market (we call it Pasar Malam) is cheap and affordable. But to be honest, not all quality is decent. As for food, you can be able to eat like locals from Indian food to Malay food and back to Chinese food. Due to the decreasing in stalls’ owners, you may also find a lot of trendy international food inspired by Korea, Japan, US… you name it.

7⃣️Be like a Baba or Nyonya.

Baba and Nyonya are those migrants from early 16th century travelled from their places to Malaya (now Malaysia and Singapore) and began to adopt the local culture by inter-marrying. Other than Melaka, Medan, Singapore and Kota Bharu, you may experience the culture of Baba or Nyonya in Penang. We have a Baba or Nyonya Peranakan museum where you can be a Baba or Nyonya for a day by renting the Baba or Nyonya attires and outfits. Besides, the last thing you want to miss out is actually Baba or Nyonya food. Be it a savoury or sweet one, they are all tantalising. My favourite one would be Chendol.

8⃣️Cafe Hopping

Like Korea, you may actually hop the cafes in Penang too. We do have a lot of cafes with unique and bewitching ambience. Especially in the heart of Georgetown. Cafes in Penang are like mushrooming everywhere, so it’s so easy for you to find one. By doing the street walking and tracking the street murals in this 24/7 summer kinda weather, you would really appreciate to have a few moments enjoying a cup of coffee and a piece of cake in the air con beautiful cafes. For your convenient, I may suggest you to try Twelve Cups (one of those with longest history haha) and The Alley (yummy churros just a few steps away from Goddess of Mercy Temple) which are located in Georgetown.

9⃣️EAT!!! But eat WHAT?!

Penang is definitely a Food Paradise to everyone. We’d gotten the reputation of the BEST state which offers BEST food in Malaysia. But, what to eat? If you follow the online or blog posts by foreign food bloggers, you might be getting some not so tasty but only famous kinda food. As a true local in Penang, I would say, there’s a lot of hidden delicious food. It’d be too long for me to list it here but I can actually help you to target on the variety. My list of dreamy food in Penang is Laksa, Hokkien Mee (mee = noodles), Curry Mee, Tomyum Mee, Nasi Lemak, Nyonya kuih, satay, bak kut teh, Indian rice, roti canai etc….

🔟SHOP!!! Where to SHOP?!

Some people, they don’t really like the nature and hot weather. Hence, I think shopping mall is a MUST to them. For me, if I travel to Korea or Taiwan, I also would go to their famous shopping mall to do some shopping therapies. In Penang, if you want to buy more expensive and branded things, you may go to Gurney Paragon and Gurney Plaza. But if you like to shop for a cheaper price range of goodies, try Queensbay Mall. I always go to Queensbay Mall as it’s the nearest to my house and I don’t really like branded stuffs unless they are FREE haha! I’m an honest girl!

Alright, do 10 of these attract you to come to Penang? If YES, you may now check and book for a flight ticket (Flight Booking)!

As a local, I hope you enjoy this genuine tips of TOP !0 THINGS TO DO IN PENANG!

Let’s see whether we have fate to meet in Penang!
